clinic

Some things are made to last. When this clinic was completed in 1889, the architects probably imagined it would still be around today, though not in this state. Now it is more a work of art than it ever was. In cooperation with time and weather, the clinic has developed a moody green patina which creates conflicting feelings of eeriness and calm. When I paused to soak in my surroundings, I felt so peaceful and at home, as if I'd always been here. I leaned against the dry-cured walls and closed my eyes, but I could still see everything. I saw the broken pillars, perfectly upright and collapsing. When a cool breeze blew through the glassless windows, covering me with flakes of green and shiny gold paint, I suddenly felt I had to leave or I'd turn into one of the unblinking cast iron columns, helpless to watch myself fall apart forever, seeing myself in a state I should never see.
