widow's mansion
[September 2002]
Infected
by the urban blight surrounding it, the diagnosis of this Brooklyn
mansion is dismal. The disease has spread from the outside in. Gaping
holes in the roof have allowed the elements to have their way with
the upper story, which has collapsed into the basement. Planks protecting
the windows have been wrenched away, providing easy access for unsavory
residents who take shelter in what little floor space is left. Laying
on the floor, surrounded by rubble and refuse, probably the last
thing on their mind is the beauty of remnants of this grand home.
The ceiling is decorated with floral swags and bows, the walls with
elegant trim and the door and window frames are constructed of beautifully-carved
wood. Maybe they do enjoy the details, who knows. One thing is is
certain, if the building isn't treated for its ailments soon, it
will be lost forever.
