Officially
opened in the summer of 1936, McCarren Pool was one of 11 city pools
built by Robert Moses during the Great Depression. Since closing
in the early 1980's, the pool has become overgrown with weeds and
grafitti, and now houses several less-than-pleasant smelling residents.
Community Board 1 and the Department of Parks and Recreation are
working on plans to revitalize the once-thriving recreation area.
Of course the grand architecture with magnificent soaring arches
and handsome brickwork is worthy of repair, but in it's present
state of deterioration, it has a certain forelorn charm.
