prison

The original buildings at this location were constructed in 1837. Over the years, more buildings were added to the complex. The addition illustrated to the right, completed in 1890, featured many improvements to the original designs, including toilets in each jail cell. Doors between the cell blocks reveal the inner workings of the plumbing- commodes, woven together by a series of rusting pipes, jut out into the space between the cell blocks. The toilet bottoms remain open- pipes must have been removed from these, for I can't imagine that set up would be sanitary. I have to say, it's kind of funny to be walking below the looming latrines, although you know they're defunct, you can't help but hurry along below them.
